India, European Union Set to Seal Landmark Free Trade Agreement by End of 2026
India and the European Union are set to conclude a landmark Free Trade Agreement by the end of 2026 after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the G7 Summit. The agreement, along with enhanced defence cooperation and progress on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, is aimed at strengthening trade, investment and strategic ties.
Describing the proposed accord as the "mother of all trade deals", Ursula von der Leyen said the agreement is expected to cover nearly a quarter of the global economy and deliver a significant boost to trade and investment between India and the European Union.
During their meeting, both sides also agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and security and accelerate efforts related to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. The leaders stressed the importance of building resilient supply chains and expanding strategic collaboration at a time of growing uncertainty across the global landscape.
The discussions underscored the commitment of India and the European Union to broaden their partnership beyond trade and enhance cooperation in key sectors. The proposed Free Trade Agreement and related initiatives are expected to strengthen economic integration and reinforce long-term strategic cooperation between the two sides in an increasingly complex international environment.
